  Hi.  I had planned to get my recommendations from two people in my workplace. One was my immediate supervisor for 3.5 years and another was a senior guy to whom I was reporting for various issues for the last 2 years. I have had a pretty solid rapport with them and both have agreed to write my recos.  The problem is that, unfortunately, both of them were transferred to a different office last month. I have not been assigned any supervisor yet and I'm afraid that by the time that happens, it will be too late for me to develop a solid relationship with him and hence he will not be able to write me a really good reco. or worse, may not agree to write one at all.  What should I do?   Use whoever you feel is best placed to know you well, and can comment meaningfully on the questions asked in the rec. If this is the people who have just been transferred, then that is the people you should use. There is no requirement or even advantage to using your current supervisor. The only issue with the recency of recommendations is that recommenders obviously can only comment on you as they know you, and using older recommenders may mean the recs do not reflect your more recent development. This may be of more significance issue if they last knew you 1 or 2 years ago, but is unlikely to be a major factor if it is only a few months. Ultimately, adcom are judging the rec based on its CONTENT, not on the timeframe in which the recommenders know/knew you. FF Reply
