  • GRE Vs. GMAT
    From: AdelleC  Aug 03, 2009 Posts 2

    Hi,

I learned recently that Wharton will now accept the GRE. Though I know the overall profile of the candidate is most important, I do want to present the strongest profile possible. Currently, I already have the GRE with verbal and quant scores of above 700 and a writing score of 6. To put my best foot forward, should I proceed with the GRE or would that weaken my profile and I should take the GMAT test.

    Thank you.

It's about the score, not about which test you take.

If you already have a GRE score, you are much better off spending the time on the rest of the application, rather than spending the time studying for and  taking the GMAT. (Unless you intend to apply to other schools which still only accept the GMAT).

Does anyone know what the median GRE score of an accepted student is? I took the GREs in 2005 so my score is from the older version of the test.

    Well AdelleC,

I'm not sure the GRE will be accepted for the class of 2012's admissions. That might happen for the class of 2013's admissions. So if you're applying for the class of 2012, then you'll be safer taking the GMAT just in case.

    Hi Adelle,

To clarify, we will not be accepting GRE scores this year.  Applicants applying for the deadline dates in October 2009, or Jan/March 2010 MUST submit a GMAT score.  You will need to take the GMAT if you are applying to be part of the Class of 2012.

I hope that helps to clarify,

    Kathryn, AdCom Staff

Thanks Adelle for your correction. Would you consult with Mr. J.J. Cutler in a recent piece of BusinessWeek he went on and said the oppossitte. Please see http://www.businessweek.com/bschools/content/jul2009/bs20090723_112095.htm?chan=bschools_bschool+index+page_getting+in

For me this is bad news i had been working for a month now on the GRE looking forward to apply for Wharton MBA 2012. Below an excerpt from the article.

Now another top-ranked business school is weighing in. The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School(Wharton Full-Time MBA Profile) plans to allow MBA applicants to submit the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), for admission in the fall of 2010, says Admissions Director J.J. Cutler. It's part of a move by the school to attract a broader applicant pool, including dual-degree students, younger applicants, and international applicants from far-flung countries without GMAT access.

"We are trying to open up a little bit the different types of people that we want to apply to business school and we don't want to create additional hurdles for them to do so," Cutler says.

As a Latin American i feel the GRE is a much nicier exam both in respecto to clarity and less subjective than the GMAT. Hope to hear from you soon.

    Best Regards, Rodrigo

I understand Wharton will begin to accept the GRE in lieu of the GMAT for applicants this fall. Adele clarified this change and the GRE site lists Wharton as an institutions that accept the GRE.

The admissions requirements section also substantiates this change:

    http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/mba/admissions/application-requirements.cfm#a6

    "GMAT/GRE

All applicants must submit results of a Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) that are no more than 5 years old, based on the date the application is received. Scores may be self-reported. "

However, there may be some confusion around this issue, as the FAQs section of the website provides the following question and answer:

    http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/mba/admissions/faqs.cfm

"Can I submit the GRE, LSAT, MCAT, or other graduate school entrance exam results instead of the GMAT?

The GMAT is the only test designed specifically for business schools to test the skills required to successfully complete an MBA program. Other entrance exams do not measure the same abilities in a comparable way."

With regard to focusing on which score to report, can anyone provide input on the following situation?

If an applicant has submitted a GMAT score in the past to Wharton, but never applied, and elects to use a GRE score for self-reporting in the application, will the AdCom focus only on the GRE score or should the applicant expect that the GMAT score will also be considered?

This is the first year GRE has been accepted, so there may be some of the legacy content rules still lingering round the website. Thanks for pointing it out.

As to your second attempt, you should report all scores.

I appreciate the intention to clarify.

On an application scores are self reported, as such, you would choose to report your highest GMAT score. Upon acceptance, and decision to enroll, the admission staff would verify your scores and see any number of scores from previous exam dates.

In the instance that a prospective student is looking at a variety of graduate programs and wishes to focus time improving a GRE score due to the fact it is more widely accepted, would that individual be tied to a GMAT score that had been previously submitted?

Adcom will consider the strongest score.

Are the scores of the previous exam dates as important?

More weight  may likely be put on your better component scores, whether they come from earlier or later tests.

To some extent, performance over time can factor in, as well. For example, if a candidate were to take several instances of the same exam and show little improvement from test to test to test (...to test...), I might question a candidate's judgment or self-awareness, a bit.
