  • Interview for an applicant living in Africa
    From: JEANRAY  Jan 18, 2013 Posts 7

    Hello,

I'm living in Cote d'Ivoire in West Africa and I wonder if interviews are usually conducted in this country. If no, what are the possible locations?

Also, I'd like to know if the team based discussion is compulsory even for someone living in my location.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

    JEANRAY,

This would be a good question to ask Admissions directly. See http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/mba/contact-us.cfm for contact information.

I don't believe Cote d'Ivoire is one of the primary hub interview locations, but a list of then-current options should be made available to you as soon as you are invited to interview. These options may change as time passes. While the team-based discussion is an important element of the new interview format, different geographical circumstances may require some adaptation (e.g., phone or videochat alternatives). The preference is for candidates to make arrangements to attend a major city hub location for an interview, though.

    Best,

    Victor

    Hi, Jean Ray,

Please check your email for further information regarding interview locations for this round. London or Sao Paulo might be your best bet.

    Best,

    Victor

Working in Ghana, I have the same issue but decided not to bother Adcom until I actually have an invite.

But I checked options anyway: From Accra I can either head for London or Dubai.

From Abidjan I assume you're best bet will be Dubai as the connections to London are not that good (at least thats what I remember).

Sao Paulo is no option from West Africa despite "geographical proximity" - there are no direct flights. You can only go via Europe or South Africa.

I am really wondering if they considered alternative solutions for applicants from remote places...

I do understand and sympathize with your situation. At the end, Wharton's AdCom wants to reach as many people as possible, yet be smart and cost-effective in the choices of location made. For better or worse, there just are not enough applicants from Western Africa unwilling to travel to currently available interview locations to make a dedicated trip to that region worthwhile, at this time.

If interview travel would place an undue hardship on you, though, do reach out to Admissions, and perhaps they can arrange some special accommodation.

    Best,

    Victor

    Dear bitterend

I was working through this post and am in a similar situation. I live in Johannesburg, South Africa and have been invited to interview. Have you had any feedback from the Admissions team around whether there are alternative options?

I am looking at the Dubai option and would really be helped out by an alternative location or even by the opportunity to use VideoCon.

    I'd really appreciate your help.

    Regards

    Kanyisa

    Kanyisa,

I'd recommend contacting Admissions directly - ideally by phone - to see if they have any alternative options they could recommend.
