  • Executive MBA Option in Full-time Application
    From: gsmon  Jan 02, 2012 Posts 3

I'm applying to the fulltime 2-year program. I saw that there is a checkbox to be considered for the EMBA program as well.

Does anyone know if my decision for the fulltime program will get affected if I check the box to be considered for the EMBA program?

I'm guessing it wouldn't matter but just wanted to confirm.

    Thanks a lot!

No, your application for the full-time program will not be directly affected if you select the EMBA program checkbox. It just notifies the EMBA folks that you may be interested in that program, as well.

The bigger issue/risk, in my opinion, is that if you are genuinely uncertain about which of the two programs you wish to partake in, chances are you may not have thought enough about why you are pursuing an MBA, and this may come across negatively in your other application materials.

    Thanks Victor.

I'm primarily interested in the fulltime program but I was under the impression that checking the EMBA box will allow be to be automatically considered for the EMBA program.

I was thinking of doing so as a mitigation strategy - if I don't get in to the fulltime program, the EMBA can automatically consider me for next year.

It seems like checking the box doesn't do that - it merely notifies admissions that I'm interested in EMBA as well. If so, it doesn't help my cause.

    Thanks!

    Hi, gsmon,

I would encourage you to contact Laura Nash at 215-898-5887; mbaexec-admissions@wharton.upenn.edu. I don't believe such a mitigation strategy is feasible through the checkbox mechanism. You might need, instead, to apply to both programs (different applications) and then make the decision based on the results for both programs.

To be blunt, there is, in my opinion, a bigger problem, here - namely that you perceive the EMBA as a backup and, in some ways, a substitute to the regular MBA program. Though not always the case, in the majority of situations, this usually reflects an insufficient understanding of one's motivations for applying for a Wharton MBA, now, and what one hopes to get out of the experience. It also may be the outcome of an insufficient appreciation of the differences between the two programs and for whom they are best suited. This is very dangerous and can lead to denials of acceptance by both programs. Just make sure this is not the case for you!

    Hello Gsmon,

Thanks for your interest in both of our programs.  As Victor suggested, I would also encourage you to contact Laura Nash with specific questions about the EMBA program so that you can understand your fit with that program more specifically.

    To clarify:

    1.       Checking the EMBA box within the full-time application does not impact your candidacy for either program in any way.

    2.       The admissions processes for the two programs are entirely separate.

    3.    Checking the EMBA box within the full-time application only means that you will receive more information on the EMBA program.  If you would like to apply to the EMBA program, you would need to take action and apply to their program separately using the EMBA application.

    4.   The option to apply to both programs is available because we realize that there are some individuals whose current professional situation allows them to consider both formats.  It is important to do your due diligence on which format is the best fit for you, and to confirm that both are viable options.  It is also important to understand that you will earn the same Wharton MBA no matter which format you pursue.

    Thanks,

    Kathryn
