Hi, I am not yet a student in college. In fact, I will only be a Sophomore in high school this coming fall. But I am currently looking into the study of Actuarial Science. I want to know all I possibly can before I decide if this is the path I wish to persue.

If you have any knowledge on this topic, please respond. : )

    Micah,

What specific questions do you have that we might be able to answer? Good for you for starting to think to the future and having a plan in mind for coming years. Just keep in mind that you still have plenty of time to learn more about various subjects before you choose an area on which to focus.

    Thank you for replying !

My first question is, what exactly is The Wharton MBA program? Is it a program that is just offered at the University of Pennsylvania? Also, what is the benefits of the program?

    micahsj,

Wharton is the business school at the University of Pennsylvania. The MBA program is one of the degree programs offered by Wharton.

Regarding your other question(s), I think it would be best if you started off looking through this website to understand better what the Wharton MBA is all about and what it can offer students. Start by looking at the links, above, titled "Home," "Academics," "Student Life," etc.

Actuarial science is basically the application of statistics in business (and finance in particular).

Insurance companies, pension plans, and the risk management areas within banks and investment houses are major employers of actuaries (or actuarial consultants).

Wharton also offers an undergraduate BSc program, that may be of more interest to you at this stage than the MBA program.

    Micah,

I work for Allstate's marketing department, and have just been informed that we now have a resource for young prospective actuaries. If you visit our Actuarial Career Program website (at http://www.allstate.com/careers/actuarial-career-program.aspx), you will be able to make an actuarial contact working in the field who will answer of your questions, regardless of your intention to eventually join Allstate. We developed this program to help get real answers to students who spend too much time engaging with insurance recruiters who wouldn't know an actuarial table if it hit them on the head. Good luck on your search. I hope this helps!
